A dental crown, or 'cap' as it is sometimes called, is usually made from porcelain or a mix of porcelain and a metal such as gold. It is used to strengthen a damaged tooth in order to preserve its functionality, whilst still giving the appearance of a natural tooth.
When are dental crowns used?
There are a number of situations when having a crown fitted may be the best option; a few of these follow.
Decay - If there is a significant amount of decay in your tooth, it may not be feasible to simply fill it. A crown is likely to be a preferable option in this situation and will give the tooth additional strength which a simple filling could not.
Broken Teeth - If your tooth has broken or has fractured, a crown can be made to build up your tooth and bring it back to its full functionality and appearance.
Root Canal - When a tooth becomes infected at the root, a root canal treatment will be needed. This involves removing the soft interior pulp of the tooth and filling it. As this process weakens the teeth, a dental crown will added to restore its strength.
Bruxism - Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is something that some of us do whilst sleeping. Over a period of time, this will inevitably wear down the teeth, and make even break them in some instances. A dental crown is an excellent way of restoring any teeth that have become damaged by this unfortunate habit.
Cosmetic Purposes - If desired, a crown can be used to improve the way that your teeth look. This would primarily be used for the visible front teeth in order to improve your smile.
Procedure for a Dental Crown
Initially, you will have a consultation to look at the options which are available. Once a crown has been chosen, the tooth will be prepared by removing any decay and then shaping it appropriately to add a crown. This process will be done using a local anaesthetic.
Once this has been done, an impression will be taken of the prepared tooth and sent to a dental laboratory for your crown to be produced. During the waiting period, which is usually a little more than a week or so, you will be fitted with a temporary crown to enable you to eat effectively.
Once the new dental crown has been returned from the laboratory, you will be recalled to have the crown fitted.
During this visit to our local Bristol dentist, the temporary crown will be removed and the new permanent crown fitted using particularly strong dental adhesive. Careful planning at the outset of your treatment will ensure that the new crown fits well and also blends naturally with the colour of your other teeth.
Longevity and our Guarantee
The length of time that a crown lasts will depend upon a number of factors. As well as the size of the crown, i.e. how much of the original tooth is left; it will also depend on how well you look after your teeth through regular brushing and flossing and if you are diligent in attending regular check ups at our Bristol dental practice.
At Beau Monde Dental Care, we are so confident about the quality of our crowns that we offer all patients a two year guarantee. With good care, a crown can be expected to last for between ten and fifteen years.
