From Young to Old, Everyone Needs Good Dental Care

Prevention is the key to the overall quality of oral health for our Bristol patients.

With so much being written and discussed about the benefits of cosmetic dental procedures; perhaps it is not surprising that the more run of the mill dental work is easily forgotten. This is not, of course, to say that cosmetic dentistry has no value. It most definitely does and not only aids in the restoration of teeth but offers the patient a new lease of life in many cases; something which should not be underestimated.

As a family dentist based in Bristol, we know the importance of looking after patients from a very young age right through to their later years. At Beau Monde Dental Care, we ensure that all of our patients receive the top quality care and advice that is needed.

Broken and Chipped Teeth

How Beau Monde Dental Care of Bristol treats and repairs damaged teeth.

Education about dental health is widespread and arguably at its peak. The effects of social media means that information and experiences can be shared and improvements can be made to a person’s overall oral health care regime. Despite this though, and the increasing knowledge and expertise of those working in the world of dentistry, sometimes breakage or chipping of a tooth can result from an accident that is unavoidable.

Whilst healthy teeth should stand up to the odd knock or two without breaking or chipping, some accidents will inevitably result in damage however well a person looks after their teeth.

Looking for a New Dentist in Bristol?

What to expect as a new patient at Beau Monde Dental Care.

It is not uncommon for a patient to stick with the same dentist for a number of years without taking into consideration what other practices might be able to offer them. This applies especially to those dental practices who offer the basics only; i.e. procedures that purely keep the teeth healthy and functional.

Whilst this is the most important aspect of dentistry without a doubt, dental advances and technology now mean that there is so much more on offer for those who are willing to look around.

So, if you would like to expand the range of dental procedures on offer to you, or, perhaps, you are new to the Bristol area, let us introduce the benefits that you can receive at Beau Monde Dental Care.

Keeping Your Skin Young Looking in Later Life

How Botox treatment at our Bristol Dental Practice can help.

We would perhaps all like to think that the skin that we had as children, healthy looking with a good amount of elasticity, would last us all the way through our lifetime. As we know though, like the rest of our body, our skin eventually shows signs of ageing and may not have the pleasing appeal that it once did.

With other aspects of our body, we are often able to hide the effects through choosing the right clothes to wear, and our hair can always be ‘beautified’ with a visit to the hairdressers.

When it comes to our facial features though, the lines and wrinkles that appear on our face are very difficult to mask. Whilst there are certain creams available that may help a little, these can only go so far in helping to make our skin look younger.

Alternatives to Amalgam Fillings in Bristol

Whiter teeth with tooth coloured, mercury-free fillings.

Having a dental filling is perhaps the most common dental procedure that most people will experience during their lifetime. Although some find them mildly unpleasant, in the vast majority of cases a filling can be carried out quickly and easily and will prevent further damage being caused by dental decay.

As well as replacing the part of the tooth that has become decayed though, a filling also needs to provide it with strength to allow its normal use when eating and chewing. This factor has led to the use of strong product called amalgam which is a mixture of metals including silver, tin, copper and, most controversially, mercury.

Because of its strength, mercury has been used for a very long time and, until quite recently, there simply has been no alternative that offered the strength and durability that it afforded. There have, however, been a number of pieces of research carried out which has caused doubt about the safety of its use in dental work.

Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Gum disease prevention and treatment at Beau Monde Dental Care in Bristol.

Have you ever noticed a small amount of blood in your saliva after you have cleaned your teeth? If so, it is quite possible that you may have the beginnings of gingivitis.  This is the common name for the less destructive period of gum disease and is usually caused by the dental plaque caused by bacterial build up around the gums and teeth.

Gingivitis can have a number of symptoms, of which bleeding from the gums is one of the most common. Other symptoms include soreness or redness of the gums along with halitosis (bad breath).

The good news for anyone with those symptoms is that, in many cases, a simple improvement in your brushing and flossing can reverse it with few, if any, long term effects.

Relax – Dental Visits Should be a Positive Experience

Overcoming dental fear for better oral health.

It is a well documented fact that a significant portion of people in the UK suffer some degree of dental phobia. This can range from a simple, slightly worried state to absolute terror for an unfortunate few.

Dental care though plays an important part in our overall health and, as well as ensuring that our teeth and gums are in good condition, may also have other roles to play. For example, a dentist is in a prime position to spot early potential signs of oral cancers and, if anything suspicious is spotted, will refer you to your doctor.

Some dental issues such as gum disease have also been linked with heart disease. This may prove to be an important discovery in the early treatment of heart problems although research is at an early stage at the moment.

Tips for whiter teeth from a Bristol Dentist

How to prevent the early onset of discoloured teeth.

Having white teeth is easily taken for granted if we are fortunate enough to have them. As time goes by though, most people find that their teeth start to gradually darken. Whilst this is, to a large degree, due to ageing, there are still factors which may cause this to happen prematurely.

Cleaning our teeth alone is simply not enough to keep our teeth white and bright. Even using tooth whitening toothpastes will have little effect due to the tiny amount of the whitening ingredient which is allowed by law.

So, given that brushing alone, even with specialist toothpastes, won’t make much difference to the whiteness of your teeth (though brushing will certainly help to keep them healthy), how can we avoid our teeth discolouring prematurely?

Dental Damage – Prevention and Repair in Bristol

Tips to avoid dental damage and what to do when things go wrong!

As children, we never think, even for a second, that we may one day lose some of our teeth permanently. Perhaps this is part of the joy of being a child, completely unaware that our actions have consequences.

As adults though, we can often look back and wish that we had taken good care of our teeth and cleaned and flossed regularly as well as not avoiding dental visits.

Generally, it should be said that, despite the increased consumption of sugar, most adults now are better educated as to how best to take care of their oral health and many do still have good teeth. At Beau Monde Dental Care we would like our patients to keep it that way too and offer the following advice on preventing damage to your teeth.

Repairing Dental Crowns – Advice From Your Bristol Dentist

What to do when a crown becomes detached.

Dental crowns are an excellent way to repair a broken tooth; this is especially so when the breakage is too large to be repaired through the use of a filling, whether this be a standard amalgam one or one of the white fillings which are available at our Bristol dental practice.

Dental crowns are usually fitted by one of two methods, depending on the integrity and size of the remaining natural tooth. In many cases, the remnant of the natural tooth will be shaped and prepared and the crown, which is produced at a dental laboratory, will then be attached to the tooth using strong dental cement.

In cases where there is insufficient natural tooth left for this method to be successful, a post is usually placed into the tooth and the crown will then be attached to this. Usually, either of these methods will provide the patient with a strong tooth; however there are occasions when these do become detached, for example biting something hard unexpectedly, or even a sporting accident can cause the crown to become detached.
